Latest News Briefs * Updated Almost Daily *
- (July 08) Riders took 215 million trips on Metrorail in fiscal year 2008, a 3.6 percent increase over the same period in 2007. Average weekday Metrorail ridership now stands at over 728,000. During June 2008, people took over 798,000 rides. This represents the highest monthly ridership of any month in Metro's 32-year history. So, here's to finally getting Metro a dedicated source of funding from DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Metro desperately needs the funding to improve its crumbling infrastructure.
- (July 06) A monthly brief by the D.C. State Data Center shows the city's population continues to increase. It is estimated that the D.C. resident population has increased by 16,283 or 2.8 percent since 2000. I think the population statistics are underestimated, but we will have to wait for the official census count in 2010. Remember, the U.S. Census Bureau underestimated D.C.'s population by about 50,000 residents in 1999, right before the 2000 official census count was conducted. Births to District residents has been the highest since 2000 at an estimated 8,157. People migrating to the District from other countries has also been positive, but domestic migration out of the District has been slightly negative. About 35,000 units of new or renovated housing have been completed or are under construction in D.C. since 2000, so I am interested to see how these numbers figure in to the upcoming census count in 2010.
- (July 04) Happy of 4th July! I will most likely be down on the National Mall taking in the fireworks display, weather permitting. Enjoy your day.
- (July 03) The D.C. Council gave preliminary approval on Wednesday for $198 million in public financing for the planned $1.5 billion Southwest Waterfront redevelopment effort. The public funding will pay for infrastructure build-out on the 23-acre site. The redevelopment project, spearheaded by PN Hoffman and Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, is slated to include about 770 housing units, 675 hotel rooms, 700,000 square feet of office space, cultural space, and new piers and parks. Check out project renderings here. Hopefully we will see shovels in the ground on this site by 2010.
